The Sky is the Limit
This project was by Stephanie Chong, Ray Wu, and Ivanka Yee; our objective was to redesign the Salt Shed on Spring Street in New York City into a library of our choice. After examining the location and its surroundings, along with visits to libraries in the city, we decided to create a children’s library. Chong and Wu took care of the product aspect while Yee designed the interior space. We created the library to encourage children to be more involved with their sensorial and educational activities. Making a safe space for kids to discover their passions and interests so they can reach the sky. As designers, we want this place to serve as a safe space for families, caregivers, and younger children to learn and engage in educational activities.
Inspired by the moon, the moon was created. Adding a shelving system to the moon chair as well, which resulted in a multifunctional scaled product that exists cohesively within the space. This product was designed to target when kids want to grab a book and sit down to read or flip through the pages.
To create a free space for children, we decided to develop a partition wall to allow the space to be freely separated, for the unpredictable nature of children’s activity. By creating a cloud form, the partition wall would allow high and low points, allowing the kids to feel safe within a space, as well as locations for the caregivers to supervise from outside this space
The table is inspired by the sun, this product will create usable space for both caregivers and children, as the seating does not have back supports to limit movements for adults.
